Beyond the Bench: Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Building Tour

$10.00

The New Orleans Architecture Foundation invites you to join us on a tour of the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Building in New Orleans. Built in 1915 in the Neo-Renaissance style, the building was originally designed for use as both a United States Post Office and a courthouse, housing both a U.S. Court of Appeals and a U.S. District Court. We will learn how the building has been adapted to its current use as one of the only thirteen U.S. Courts of Appeal, and how the building’s status as a historic landmark relates to current courthouse design.

This tour will examine how the design, adaptation, and preservation of a historic federal courthouse directly impacts occupancy well-being, life safety, and environmental quality. Participants will explore critical aspects of building performance, including accessibility, fire protection, security planning, and indoor environmental conditions.

The tour emphasizes the role of natural daylighting and historic design strategies in supporting mental health, reducing stress, and improving user experience within judicial settings. It also addresses how integrating modern systems into a historic structure can enhance safety, meet current building codes, and improve occupant comfort without compromising architectural integrity.

The tour will start promptly at 4:00 pm at 600 S. Maestri Place. 1 HSW credit is pending for architects looking for CEUs. Drinks and socializing to follow.
